803 - THE MOLE PEOPLE

Genre:  ’50s Monster / Sci-Fi (1956, B&W)

Synopsis:  In this film, John Agar and Hugh Beamont (aka Ward Cleaver) lead an expedition up some mountain.  Up there, they find some ruins of a temple when one of their party falls into a hole.  They then descend down into the hole to save him (even though there’s no way the guy survived) and when they get to the bottom, some rocks collapse, killing another guy in their party and trapping the expedition underground.  They then start wandering around, looking for another way out and stumble across a temple run by some albino cult.  They use their “Fire Stick of the Gods” (aka what us surface dwellers call a “flashlight”) to subdue the light-sensitive people and make the underground people think that they were sent from heaven by the god Ishtar.  Agar and Beamont continue this charade and learn that the albino people have enslaved a primitive species of Mole People to do their digging for them.  Eventually, Agar and Beamont’s flashlight batteries die out and they have to escape, but not before starting a Mole People revolt.  Luckily, a “sacrifice” chamber used by the high priest is actually a tunnel back to the surface!  They climb out and an earthquake hits, destroying the temple and killing the “normal” girl they took back with them.

Don’s Review:  The third episode of the Sci-Fi era, with the too silly Planet of the Apes stuff still going on.  I, of course, didn’t like the Earth-side host segments, although the one on the SOL were okay.  The riffing on the movie was decent, but not up to the level of Comedy Central era episodes featuring similar movies.  All-in-all, this is a decent episode.
