622 - ANGELS’ REVENGE (RHINO DVD Box #2 and VHS)

Genre:  ’70s Cheesy Cheesecake / Charlie’s Angels Rip-off (1978, Color)

Synopsis:  Ahhh, yes, finally my type of MST flick: a cheesy ’70s jigglefest.  The basic plot (aside from just showing off T&A) is about a Vegas lounge singer (managed by the Skipper himself, Alan Hale Jr.), who’s son or younger brother or neighbor’s kid or something gets beaten up by a curly-headed drug pusher and his boss, Jack Palance.  She and a school teacher have a plan and approach a female crime group (called “7” – I think – because it keeps popping up on the screen a lot) to blow up a building where the criminals keep all of their illegal drugs (drug dealers who keep all of their drugs in one building... okay...)   The group first buys a van from Mr. Hankey of Green Acres, which they then convert into some sort of cheesy super van, with rocket launchers and a machine gun turret.  They next raid the compound of Jim Backus (who completely embarrasses himself in this movie), for what reason I don’t know, then they finally raid the drug warehouse (most of which was shown in the pre-credits prologue, the movie up to this point was simply a flashback).  Although they have now successfully blown up the drugs, the bad guys figure out who they are and kidnap the one who is a school teacher (or, in Charlie’s Angels terminology: she’s not one of the pretty ones, she’s the “smart” one).  But the young teenage girl of the group is able to follow by hanging on to the back of Jack Palance’s car and tells the rest of the group where the school teacher is being held hostage.  They all arrive in their super cheese van and assault the home of the chief drug bad guy, played by Peter Lawford.  After fighting it out with the bad guys, the girls all win due to their great fighting skills (yeah, right!) and they free the school teacher.

Host Segments:

  • Prologue:  Crow has amnesia, or so he thinks
  • Segment One:  The Mads dress as ’70s relief baseball pitchers, and also turn M&tBs into the cast of the TV show Renegade (which starred Lorenzo Lamas)
  • Segment Two:  Crow’s new funky and afro-y script based on the ’70s
  • Segment Three:  Crow and Tom are playing “Go Fish” while Mike imitates Fonzie from Happy Days (which is soon rectified)
  • Segment Four:  Aaron Spelling’s house floats by the SOL (a very long house in a very short skit!)
  • Segment Five (End):  Tom’s Shame-o-meter shows all of the embarrassing celebrity cameos in the feature;  Mads now are dressed as Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs

Stinger:  Shine Your Love

Don’s Review:  This was a fun MST episode for me but I’m the type who much prefers the cheesy films over the simply bad films.  The riffing was fairly good throughout and, although the host segments were not very memorable, they were all so short due to the length of the film that they never really registered anyway.  So, overall, this is a fun, cheesy episode that should have good repeat value.
