616 - RACKET GIRLS with short: ARE YOU READY FOR MARRIAGE?

Genre:  Female Wrestling/Crime (1951, B&W)

Short:  This dated little short is about marriage and how it relates to little dolls on strings (I think the strings are supposed to touch without crossing or something).  M&tBs riff this hilarious short well and it’s also on the tape Mr. B’s Lost Shorts??!! available from the MST3K Info Club.

Synopsis:  When I see that a movie is going to be about female wrestlers, I figure “just how bad could it be?”  Now I know.  Very, very, very, very, very, very bad.   So bad that I actually was wishing that it would get as good as an Ed Wood directed movie (now that’s bad!).  The basic story is about a sleazy wrestling manager and the female wrestlers who work for him.  How sleazy is he?  When one of the female wrestlers is having some financial trouble, he agrees to help her only if she’ll become a prostitute.  As for the female wrestlers, well... they aren’t exactly an attractive lot.  Peachy, probably the best looking one because of her sizable chest, is featured more than the others.  So we get to see her training to be a wrestler, which involves long scenes of her jogging and of her skipping rope (like I said, she has a very sizable chest).  The rest of the movie features female wrestling matches that tediously drag on and on.  And the “plot” of the movie involves some gangsters leaning on the sleazy manager so he decides to – gasp! – “fix” some wrestling matches! (Huhhh???).  Eventually, the gangsters chase down the sleazy manager and kill him but the police get there in time to arrest the gangsters.

Don’s Review:  Despite the awful movie, this was still an enjoyable episode to watch, mainly due to the great dated little short that opens it.  This short lead directly to the host segments, where Crow decides he wants to marry Tom Servo, which is pretty funny until it degenerates into a lame wrestling skit.  The riffing on this episode was decent, not the best of the Mike era, but there are still a number of great lines here and there.  So, unless you are a huge Lisa Loeb fan (she – deservedly IMO – gets bashed mercilessly in this episode), this is a good one to check out someday.
