522 - TEEN-AGE CRIMEWAVE

Genre:  Teens-Gone-Bad (1955, B&W)

Synopsis:  From the director who gave us The Night the World Exploded and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers comes this, another in the cycle of movies about old-looking “bad” teens preying on everyday “decent folk.”  In this one, a small teen gang of two guys (Mike and Al) and a girl (Terry) rob a doughy-looking guy that Terry picked up in a bar.  One of the guys, Al, is on a blind-date with a girl named Jane at the time and, when the police show up, Jane and Terry are caught and arrested.  Jane protests her innocence but not even her parents believe her so she is sentenced, along with Terry, to juvenile reform school.  But, while they are being transferred, Terry’s boyfriend Mike shows up and springs them both, killing a cop in the process.  They ditch their car and hid out at a farmhouse owned by an old couple.  It then degenerates into a long, drawn-out hostage drama as Mike takes the old people prisoner and he and Terry run around pointing their guns at everyone in the farmhouse while talking tough and generally acting crazy (well, actually only Mike acts crazy; Terry, on the other hand, she just acts slutty).  Soon, the old couple’s son shows up and he too is taken hostage (and causes Terry to act even sluttier).  And the rest of the movie shows the cops gradually track them down while the old man sits around and reads continuously from the Bible, everyone freaks out anytime the phone rings, and Jane screams hysterically every once and a while.  It all ends with the cops showing up and the bad “teens” trying to get away but getting caught or shot in the end (because crime just doesn’t pay!).

Don’s Review:  This is one bad movie with the “teens” acting tough in a ’50s sort-of-way until they meet their just deserves.  This episodes has enough decent riffing that I enjoyed watching it a great deal, but it’s not one of the better episodes of the show.  So, overall, this is a pretty good episode that’s definitely worth a look for anyone into this particular genre of movies.
Trivia Note: The end credits of this episode start and restart again and again in a funny skit as Frank gets continuously sprayed by Dr. F’s invention: Mace Hair Mousse (called Satan’s Jockstrap).
