519 - OUTLAW (OF GOR)
Genre: Grungy Sword and Sorcery, or something
(1989, Color)
Synopsis: In this feature, a sequel to another movie called simply Gor (which I, thankfully, have never seen), a guy named Tarl Cabot
and his his fat, bumbling moron friend Watney are both mystically transported by some old guy with a glowing mood ring to the planet of Gor, where they are immediately chased by some guys on horses.
Soon, though, there is a banquet for the return of Cabot to Gor (I’m guessing he did something great in the first movie, namely going away). But the queen of the planet
inexplicably sleeps with the moron friend and then kills her husband, assuming control with a drunken Jack Palance as her High Priest in
power (...although he’s probably not as high as he must have
been when he
agreed to be in this movie).
The queen tries to capture Cabot, but he gets away. Cabot rescues some girl from a slave auction and then he and his friends fight against the queen and... well, why go on?
– it’s all pretty predictable stuff the rest of the way.
Don’s Review: For me, this was one hilarious episode
– maybe because I really enjoy these cheesy Sword &
Sorcery type films. This movie is one of the worst of that
genre and, as M&tBs are forced to endure, possibly the world
champ for number of hinder shots in a single film. The riffing was top-notched
and the host segments were very good, like the memorable Fabio skit.
So, all-in-all, this is a great episode and one I look forward to seeing
again (and again and again).
Trivia
Note: This is the episode that won the 1993 Peabody Award for Outstanding Quality Programming.
Don’s Rating:
Forrest’s Review: Outlaw is a classic.
It’s the heir to Cave Dwellers. While Deathstalker
was a great episode, the laughs found here are quite a bit more.
First, this movie somehow was able to beat Deathstalker in terms of
nastiness, but still Cabot (a character’s name that this movie forces you to remember) is nowhere near as loathsome as
is the character Deathstalker... but Cabot’s sidekick is. His sidekick (a nerdy guy that makes Dr.
Erhardt look like a jock) is more loathsome than Carrot Top, nearly as unfunny as Pauly Shore, and even stupider than Dr. Phil.
I’d go as far as to say that he’s the worst character to ever appear on the show.
I like Mike’s riff at the end: “Man! There wasn’t enough of that guy in the
movie.”
The riffing is MST3K at its very best, and one of the best of
Season Five. There was so much hate inflicted by Mike and the
’Bots onto the movie, even more so at times than expressed in the Sci-Fi
Era (excluding
Invasion of the Neptune Men). In fact, the riffing in this episode is kind of ahead of its time. This is MST at its best.
The host segments were also hilarious. Seeing this episode again, I can now see why Don rates it so
highly, and he’s 100% right!
