509 - THE GIRL IN LOVER’S LANE
Genre: Dated “Troubled Youth” Drama
(1959, B&W)
Don’s Synopsis: A young man, named Danny, has run away from home and meets a drifter, named Bix
Dugan (whom J&tBs
more accurately call Big Stupid), who agrees to tag along with Danny and watch out for him... and his money.
They end up in a small town where they meet Carrie, a shy, naive girl working in her
father’s diner.
Big Stupid starts seeing Carrie but he plans on leaving soon (Because
he’s a drifter, see? He’s no good! Understand?). Meanwhile, the town creep, Jesse (played by a perfectly
cast Jack Elam), keeps showing up at the diner and bothering Carrie.
Danny keeps inadvertently picking up whores left and right (because
he’s loaded with money
– he has almost a hundred dollars!) whom Big Stupid has to constantly chase away (there are a lot of ambiguously gay overtones between Danny and Big
Stupid in this flick). Eventually, Big Stupid and Danny decide to leave
town but, on the same night, Jesse attacks Carrie and kills her.
The townsfolk blame Big Stupid for the death and Carrie’s father leads a mob to get revenge for his
daughter’s death.
Will they kill Big Stupid? Will Danny get there in time? Will they catch the real killer?
More importantly, does anyone really care???
Don’s Review: I have to admit that I
wasn’t really looking forward to this episode
– the movie didn’t sound too interesting and I had never really heard much about this particular experiment.
But, after seeing it, I’ve got to say that this is one of the best episodes of the
show! The riffing is dead-on, all the time! Except for the somewhat downbeat ending, this movie is easy material for J&tBs,
such as Danny’s constant screw-ups that Big Stupid has to rescue him from.
The host segments are pretty good too, especially the segment with the “Train Song.”
I think this is an episode that needs to be released on home video one day.
So all together now, Rhino, Rhino, Rhino, Rhino.
