419 - THE REBEL SET with short: JOHNNY AT THE FAIR
Genre: Heist Film (1959, B&W)
Short: The short in this experiment is about a kid
who ditches his parents and then wanders about a state fair.
The riffing on this by J&tBs is excellent which is why this is
one of my all-time favorite shorts.
Synopsis: The alternate title to the movie – Beatsville
– is a lot more accurate than
The Rebel Set because, unlike The Beatniks (ep
#415), this movie does have actual Beatniks in it. The basic plot starts off in a Beatnik Jazz Club (that looks pretty cool to me) as the
club owner brings together three unemployed guys to help him pull off a heist of $1 million.
They all agree and help successfully pull off the robbery of a armored truck, but then deceit and double-crossing starts to happen on the train trip to Newark after the heist.
Don’s Review: Although
nearly not on the level of a great heist film like Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing,
I actually thought this was a half-way decent film. I mean, besides some goofy beatnik scenes (which were true to Hollywood form), I thought it really held together.
The riffing on this was great, as usual, for a Season Four episode and the host segments were also pretty funny.
Overall, this is a very enjoyable episode and, in my book, one of the best
of this season.
