"I'll Moon ya!"415 - THE BEATNIKS with short: GENERAL HOSPITAL PT 2

Genre:  ’50s Teen Rebel, I guess (1960, B&W)

Short:  This experiment opens with another segment of the General Hospital soap opera.  It’s just as dated as the other segments seen on MST (in Ep #413 and Ep #417), and J&tBs do a decent job riffing this short.

Synopsis:  The feature tells the story of Eddie, an aspiring singer and his goofball friends, one of whom – Mooney – is a genuine psycho (a better title for the movie would be Eddie and the Losers).  Eddie is discovered by an agent in a diner and is invited to come and sing a song on TV.  Unfortunately, his friends also come along and psycho Mooney begins shooting, stabbing, or threatening to “moon” everyone (I think he meant stab by that, but you never know).  Eddie, now that he has a singing career and a new girlfriend, wants to be rid of his friends and I can’t blame him – they are all pretty annoying!  Anyway, the cops round up most of the friends, except Mooney, so Eddie and Mooney have an alley fight outside the record studio, which is the only somewhat interesting scene in this entire lame film.

Don’s Review:  This movie was apparently made by people who obviously had no idea what a Beatnik was, because not a single person in the film matches that description!  Eddie does sing a form of jazz – but it’s the pop crooning style of Sinatra, not the jazz styles favored by real beatniks.  The riffing by J&tBs is somewhat disappointing in this episode – there are a lot of good comments, but overall the riffing is not as great as it is in some other episodes from this season of the show.  The host segments vary a bit, with the funniest featuring the Mads in their Troll costumes.  Overall, this is just a decent episode.

Don’s Rating:    [ S:   F: ]
