414 - TORMENTED
Genre: Ghost (1960, B&W)
Synopsis: A jazz pianist named Tom who lives on an island is visited by
his old girlfriend Vi who wants to stop his upcoming marriage.
They meet in an old, abandoned lighthouse and the railing she’s leaning on gives way.
Tom does nothing to help as Vi loses her grip and falls to her death.
Then, not only does Tom have to help plan his upcoming marriage and deal with a
blackmailing beatnik milkman/boat driver,
he is haunted by the dead woman’s ghost! So, for the rest of the film, her footsteps, lost jewelry, or disembodied parts are seen by Tom
everywhere! Eventually, the ghost Vi drives Tom to follow in her footsteps, so to speak.
Don’s Review: This one is a bit usual for our old pal, Bert I. Gordon, since
it’s more psychological than his usual fare, although it’s still pretty lame like all of his films.
The scenes where the dead woman’s disembodied hand and head show up are hysterical, even without the riffing.
And this is another great case of “lame movie = great riffs” because J&tBs are in great form throughout this movie.
And that, plus some pretty good host segments (the end segment
with Frank wishing that he lived with J&tBs is my favorite), make for a great episode.
