411 - THE MAGIC SWORD

Genre:  Low Budget Fantasy (1962, Color)

Synopsis:  In what may be considered Bert I. Gordon’s masterpiece, this is a loose telling of the story of St. George and the Dragon.  A king’s beautiful daughter is kidnapped by an evil sorcerer (played by an old Basil Rathbone) who plans to sacrifice her to a dragon. The king plans to send out the deceitful Sir Branton to save her, but the adopted son of a sorceress (or is she just a Witch refugee from Bewitched?) named Sir George (played by Gary Lockwood, i.e.. Frank Poole from 2001) and his six reanimated knights join in on the quest to overcome the seven curses and save the princess.  As the brave knights face each curse, George’s six knight companions are killed faster than red-shirts on Star Trek, until it’s only Sir George and the deceptive Sir Branton left.  But George, after being rescued from the sorcerer’s dungeon by Darby O’Gill and the Little People, slays the giant, two-headed puppet dragon in an extremely unexciting fight and saves the princess.  And I guess they then got hitched, started the whoopie machine, popped out some rugrats, and lived happily ever after.

Don’s Review:  For a Mr. BIG flick, this really wasn’t that bad.  In fact, I think J&tBs enjoyed it somewhat and were into the movie a bit, since the riffing was a bit lower-keyed than usual for Season Four.  Despite few memorable riffs, this was still an enjoyable episode to watch because the movie itself, though cheesy, moved rather well.  The host segments are good, though not very memorable either, so this is an average run-of-the-mill episode, overall.
