112 - UNTAMED YOUTH
Genre: ’50s Teen / Crime
(1957, B&W)
Synopsis: This experiment is one of those
campy ’50s teen movies that has usual the run-ins with
authorities, music and dancing, and almost no one under
the age of 25 acting in it. It stars the enormously
talented, platinum-blonde Mamie Van Doren as a singer
who, along with her sister, are sentenced by a woman
judge to work at a farm because they illegally
hitchhiked. There they, along with other
“teen” criminals, pick cotton and are fed dog-food
by the cowboy-hat wearing, tyrannical owner of the farm.
Of course, there’s still time for Mamie to display her
great talents – and she sings too! (I think it
was a song about giant melons, but I can’t remember
exactly.) Luckily, the son of the judge sneaks
around a lot and finds out what’s going on so he can try
to convince his mom that all is not right on the farm.
But enough of that, Mamie sings again! This time,
I think the song was about two large jello molds, but I
can’t remember exactly. Anyway, the mom judge
finally figures out that she’s been duped by the farm
owner and she rushes there in time to save the
“teens” and arrest the bad guys.
Don’s Review: A campy fun
movie is featured here and the riffing on this ep is
pretty good although it does get sparse at times
(typical for Season One). But the host segments
were pretty weak (the best one is where they just go off
on an odd running joke from the movie about a female
character that they think looks like Greg Brady).
Still, for anyone who’s a big fan of Girls Town (ep
#601) then also seeing this episode is a must.
