K17 - TIME OF THE APES
Genre:
Japanese Sci-Fi (1974, Color)
Synopsis:
This movie is riffed again on the show during its cable
run, so read the write-up for ep #306
- Time of the Apes for a plot synopsis.
Don’s Review:
This movie, another from Sandy Frank, is a confusing and
extremely cheesy Planet of the Apes rip-off.
Joel wasn’t available for this episode, so the SOL host
segments have him being locked out of the ship, naked in
space. Therefore, Tom Servo and Crow watch the
movie alone and actually do a decent job riffing it.
Although not nearly as good as the riffing in the later
version of this movie (ep #306)
because it’s still in the low-key KTMA style, there are
some great riffs here that aren’t repeated in the later
version. Another added plus (in a way) is that the
movie is not edited down, so some sequences actually
make more sense in this version (although not much
more). The host segments are amusing, but are all
rather short because of the length of the movie (I
particularly liked the opening segment on Bosses).
So, not a bad KTMA episode overall, but as a repeated
movie, it’s really not one of the first KTMA eps to try
to get.
