K07 - GAMERA VS. ZIGRA

Genre:  Japanese Monster (1971, Color)

Synopsis:  This movie is riffed again on the show during its cable run, so read the write-up for ep #316 – Gamera vs. Zigra for a plot synopsis.

Don’s Review:  This KTMA episode features the seventh – and final – Gamera Monster movie, which follow the giant flying turtle as he fights a giant shark like monster from another planet called Zigra.  As for the riffing here, it’s still in the rather sparse early-KTMA style, but is getting better and more like the riffing seen later during this initial MST season.  And, once again, Tom Servo (Josh) comes up with the best lines during the movie.  The host segments start with the unfreezing of Crow, who had been a Christmas Tree for the previous couple of episodes, and then moves on to the first transmission from the Mads ever seen on the show, as well as a bit of funny footage of the Russian version of MST (a different version of this comedy skit would be repeated during Season Two in episode #205).  Later, J&tBs countdown to the new year of 1989 because this episode was originally run during New Year’s Eve.  But overall, the host segments are rather short due to the length of the movie (which is uncut here).  So, this is an okay KTMA episode, but the later cable version of this movie is a whole lot better.
