Intro: My favorite bot is
Crow. Crow, the majority of the times is able to always
say his lines and make them funny, even if it’s a not-so-great
riff. Crow started out extremely cheap looking in the KTMA series, and his mouth could barely move. So
here’s my
salute to Crow T. Robot
Made of: Tupperware, glow in the dark ping-pong balls,
football (KTMA), soap dish
Full Name: Crow The (T.) Robot
First Episode Appearance: K00 - The Green Slime
Appearance: In Season One, Crow looked much like the one
we know today, but in the theater, he seems to almost disappear
sometimes, especially with the green theater seats. And in
Seasons Three through Seven, Crow looked the same throughout,
and in Seasons Eight through Ten, he looked slightly, very,
very, slightly different.
Personality: In KTMA, Crow seemed to be just there,
just there to sit in a theater for kicks, and the very poor
ad-lib jobs by Trace didn’t help (in my opinion, Trace was the
worst wisecracker in the KTMA saga).
In Season One, Crow developed a new
personality, instead of being just there, you stated to like the
character, you started to see a new Crow, although he was still
using a very weird voice that The
Satellite News calls it Trace’s "baby voice".
And, in my opinion, he delivered the most convincing riffs in
Season One, although overall the Season sucked.
In Season Two, MST3K seemed to be
getting on track, and especially Crow, who had now changed a bit
from being a wisecracking piece of machinery into an actual
character, who was witty, smart, and much more slick than seen
in any of the previous seasons.
In Season Four, Crow now had a sarcasm
that I found very funny. Trace’s puppetry skills had improved
greatly in Season Three (which is my favorite of the Joel era),
and now the jokes were very slick (I must say that the really
funny riffing didn’t really start in Season Three, but it was Godzilla
vs. Megalon in Season Two when the riffing finally
became hilarious). Crow was still using the
"baby-voice" but gave it a bit of a rest by the
near-middle of the season, and he started to sound like the Crow
we know from Season Four through Season Seven.
In Season Four, Trace made Crow’s voice
sound once again different, the speed I guess had changed, from
KTMA through Season Three, it seemed to be just a bit more slow,
but the tone and speed of Crow’s voice had changed a lot more
than most MiSTies may think, it became faster, and more
human-like. Plus Crow seemed to move a lot more, they
eyes, mouth, everything moved much more smoothly, and it became
more than a puppet, but an actual person. Crow had finally
defined his personality in Season Four and he kept it the same.
In Season Five, Crow was nearly the
same as in Season Four, delivering the great jokes, and making
us laugh, along with outstanding puppeteering. Then Mike
Nelson moved in. Crow slightly changed again. He
seemed to be in charge along with Tom Servo, and they seemed to
treat Mike a bit more as how Joel treated them.
In Season Six and Seven, Crow, Tom, and
Mike were equals, which I liked, because in Seasons One through
Five, Joel seemed to be more in control of everything, and the
robots were almost as though they were his kids. In
Seasons Six and Seven, the three seemed to all be equals.
In Seasons Eight, Nine, and Ten, Crow
went through his biggest change ever, he was now voiced and
operated by a new person: Bill Corbett. Many thought it
would be impossible, many thought that it was absurd, I mean who
could replace Trace as Crow? Our beloved Crow. Bill
Corbett pulled it off, and had most MiSTies happy (although the
MiSTies who had been long time fans seem to be a bit bias
towards him). Crow had changed greatly (for the backup
story of why, go read a review of episode #801:
Revenge of the Creature) because he was of course
controlled by a new guy. Crow in Seasons Two through Seven
showed a cleverness, a sort of wisecracking sarcasm. Bill’s Crow, on the other hand, was much more goofy, with a sort
of daft quality about him, yet delivering just as funny, if not
funnier lines as the previous Crow. I was one of the lucky
MiSTies that saw the initial Sci-Fi episode Revenge
of the Creature late, because if I had seen it
before I saw my first Sci-Fi episode (which was Girl
in Gold Boots), I might have hated the Sci-Fi Era as
well. Overall Bill and Trace are both great, and I enjoy
each versions because they both have strengths, but they have no
weaknesses, and Crow has remained my favorite bot from the show.
